USA – F1 Visa
Let’s start with the basics:
Application Process for an F1 Visa:
- Get Accepted by a SEVP-Certified School: First, you need to be accepted by a school that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
- Form I-20: Once accepted, the school will issue you a Form I-20.
- Pay the SEVIS Fee: You must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
- Complete Form DS-160: Fill out the online nonimmigrant visa application form.
- Schedule and Attend a Visa Interview: You’ll need to schedule an interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate and bring your Form I-20, DS-160 confirmation page, passport, photos, and other required documents.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Full-Time Enrollment: You must be enrolled as a full-time student.
- Sufficient Funds: You need to prove that you have enough funds to cover your tuition and living expenses.
- English Proficiency: You must demonstrate English proficiency, usually through tests like TOEFL or IELTS.
- Intent to Return Home: You must show that you intend to return to your home country after your studies.
Allowed Activities:
- On-Campus Employment: You can work on-campus during your first academic year.
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT): You can engage in practical work experiences that are part of your academic curriculum.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT): After your first academic year, you can participate in OPT, which allows you to work in your field of study for up to 12 months.
- STEM OPT Extension: If you’re in a STEM field, you may be eligible for an additional 24 months of OPT.
