Get Accepted by a SEVP-Certified School

The first step to obtaining an F1 visa is to get accepted by a school that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Research Schools: Look for schools in the U.S. that offer programs aligned with your academic interests and career goals. Ensure that these schools are certified by SEVP, as only these schools can issue the necessary documentation for an F1 visa.
  2. Application Process: Each school has its own application process. Generally, you will need to:
    • Submit an application form.
    • Provide academic transcripts and certificates.
    • Submit standardized test scores (like SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
    • Provide letters of recommendation.
    • Write a personal statement or essay.
    • Pay an application fee.
  3. Acceptance Letter: If the school decides to accept you, they will send you an acceptance letter. This letter is crucial because it proves that you have been accepted to a legitimate program in the U.S.
  4. Form I-20: Upon accepting you, the SEVP-certified school will issue you a Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.” This form is essential for your F1 visa application, as it contains information about your program, the school, and the estimated costs.
  5. Verify SEVP Certification: It’s important to verify that the school is SEVP-certified. You can check this through the SEVP School Search Tool.
